Harrod’s Holiday Trifle

For the past 5 years or so, I’ve made Trifle every Christmas. It’s a recipe I nicked out of a Harrod’s Cookbook I own. I actually now have the recipe memorized. Here’s the one I made last year in Vegas for the Fam.

It’s always a big hit. So I thought I’d share the recipe.

The Beach

I watched The Beach fairly recently. I really love that film. I enjoy Leonard DiCaprio’s work (and not because my wife hung out with him at the Ghostbar in Las Vegas) and this film was well shot, with a compelling storyline, decent soundtrack and beautiful beaches.

Penalty Kicks

As an Englishman, discussing penalty kicks invariably ends in tears. We’re talking about soccer or football here, where one player stands 12 yards from goal and tries to place it past a goalkeeper. The odds are in the penalty takers favor. Unless you are English. Check out this Wall Street Journal article if you are really interested about England’s knack for choking. I’ve seen it enough.

England Team

England at Soldier Field in 2005 (no penalties that day)

I used to play soccer a lot. I don’t as much anymore – job, travel, baby, etc. I’m okay with that. But this past Sunday I did. It was my first full match in a year. I played 80/90 minutes on a hot day, hard ground. It was an absolute blast. I took a penalty.

I love…

Football. Or soccer. I remember my first World Cup in 1982. I collected the Panini stickers. I was staying with family in France, and I remember as Paolo Rossi had the tournament of his dreams. I remember in 1986 as Diego Maradona defeated England with true artistry and con artistry. In 1990, I discovered English pubs and wept with the nation when Paul Gascoigne, Gazza, picked up a yellow card and automatic suspension for the semi-final. In 1994, I went to my only World Cup match (Spain vs Germany) and was boarding a plane in Portland, Oregon as England played a thrilling match with Argentina…and Beckham was minutes away from a red card. 1998 – I watched a sleepy Ronaldo and a practical deity in Zidane. 2002, France didn’t show up, Ronaldo found redemption, and Seaman got lobbed. And in 2006, Rooney saw red, in more ways than one. It’s been tough being an England fan.
