The Beach
I watched The Beach fairly recently. I really love that film. I enjoy Leonard DiCaprio’s work (and not because my wife hung out with him at the Ghostbar in Las Vegas) and this film was well shot, with a compelling storyline, decent soundtrack and beautiful beaches.
I’m not a traditional beach goer. I can’t sit there for hours, I have to explore or be doing something. But over the years I’ve found myself at beaches all over the world – England, US, Spain, Malaysia, Australia, Turkey, Sicily, Cuba, Greece and Jamaica. That’s an incredible amount of sunburn. Now I’m writing from the Isle of Palms – a place I visited 19 years ago for my cousin’s wedding. The beach hasn’t changed. My cousin and I have.I’ve been on the beach every day so far. Being a parent has many advantages. One of those includes having a son that just wants to play. It makes the monotony of beaching, a little more exciting. I’m older now, which means two things – I appreciate the time I have on a beach, and I use sun block now.
I like that you can always count on waves. I like that ocean makes you very clean (even under the nails). I like the hot sun on me. I like the breeze that comes in off the sea. I like to see how happy kids are at the beach. I like that my swim suit fits. I like running in the sand. I like building castles and troughs. I like thinking on a beach. I like napping on beaches. I like swimming. In essence, I like beaches. Okay?
F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote or said (I have no idea, I googled it) – “The world, as a rule, does not live on beaches and in country clubs.” I get it – both are a treat or a privilege. I’ll pass on a country club, but there is something special about sitting on a beach – not something to take for granted.
But now I kind of want to live near the beach. I think I’m ready for the beach way of life. Okay?
What do you like about beaches?
